Without these essential ingredients, most family portrait sessions will not run as smoothly as you’d hope. But once family members realize there’s no pressure in a portrait session and the goal is to enjoy yourselves and be yourselves, all usually goes well. I always allow enough time for the kids to be fed, the parents to hydrate and the photographer to regroup!
Two aspects of the photo I have control over are lighting and composition. I think this is why I’m always drawn to portraiture. Whether I’m photographing children, families, couples or confident women, I enjoy mentally ‘creating’ the photos from the time I shoot the first frame to the time I edit the last picture.
Family portraits can be tricky, but when families prepare for anything and everything, it runs smoothly and the end result is wonderful.
