Most people don’t know what that means. To me, it means I care about what’s happening in the world at all times and when I shoot, I do so from a news photographer’s perspective. I’m always looking for secret moments and glances that I can only catch when I’m constantly aware of my surroundings (even if that’s behind me).
As a former newspaper photographer, I’m keenly aware of the moments you have only one chance to catch and I do my best to be there for every one of them. I love the cliché of being a “fly on the wall” because that’s what every documentary photographer hopes to be. We want to be ignored and we want to capture the best moments when no one else is watching.
I’m so grateful for my years spent as a newspaper photographer because it truly has prepared me to shoot anything in life. I’ve learned the sensitivity needed to cover a wedding, funeral or the birth of a child. But I’ve also acquired some spontaneity and gusto along the way to photograph the darker side of life including natural disasters, fires, car accidents and protests.
Inside these galleries, you’ll see what I saw and be a part of the events I attended carrying only a camera and some confidence.
